Intro/ Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Super Mario Galaxy

Posted by FGIJonC Nov. 20, 2007 @ 8:41 AM EST

This is my first posting with the Newgrounds bulletin system. My name is Jon C, and I am an animator-director-producer-voice actor-writer- actor-business owner- and whatever the hell I am/do. I love movies, cartoons, flash animations(and games), video games and just about anything when it comes to creating. Everything I do when it comes to my writing and such, is for everyone else. Not really me at all. The only thing I truly want out of it is knowing everyone is happy when they think of something I made, and/or if it calls for being sad, for them to be sad, or at least say it was made well. I really don't care about the money, sure it'd be great I guess, but I'm pretty sure I would just donate a lot of it and whatnot. What use would I truly have for 10000000000343843843 million dollars? I'd pay off what bills I'd had, get a decent house, a car, and some toys for me and my family, then just give the rest of the cash away.

Also, I may try to post one of these bulletins at least once a week. If people will read them and whatnot. I'll try to post things which may adhere to things you all are intersted in, they usually won't be just emo-blogs or anything.

Now, that I have semi-properly introduced myself to you all, below is what I felt compelled to write about.

I recently bought Call of Duty last week. Though I had heard great things about it, I was tettering on buying it, or Assasin's Creed(which I still intend on getting). Well, standing there with the sweat perspiring on my forehead struggling not to pour into my eyes, I knew I needed to make a decision. In some ways it seemed a mere life and death situation. I had put five dollars down on Assassin's Creed in order to reserve it, so I could get it for five dollars cheaper, but a whole multitude of factors came into play. The single player mode, replayability of it, the multiplayer and what it truly had to offer.

Now, I own an Xbox 360, and I instantly fell in love with it. I never owned the original Xbox, I would never be able to afford it, plus I didn't actually want one. but I wanted a 360, and when I got one I was mighty impressed. I was even more impressed with Xbox Live.

As I stood there, then noticing the sun was going to be lowering sometime soon I knew I needed to make a decision. After weighing the pros and cons again, I grabbed both cases and walked up to the counter and asked one of the employees which one they would recommend. Well, it being a video game store, one would think the employees would be on top of the games coming out and would have at least played a demo of it. Well, the guy I spoke to (nice guy, don't get me wrong), if I am able to remember correctly, hadn't played either of them. He mentioned if I'm a person who likes to play online, then Call of Duty 4 may be for me, if not, then Assassin's Creed may be my choice. He didn't help at all with my dilemma, he had just fueled its flame even higher nearly burning me alive.

Fact is, I'm not some hardcore online player. Moreso casual, I guess you could say. I'm not one of those people who play a game so much, they become very very good at it, are in the top ten of the global ranks, and are without a live. I'm one of the type who are pretty good (or try to be, but its about fun right?) at the games they play, some more than others, and still am able (while struggling sometimes) to maintain a life. But, something about Call of Duty 4 and the customization I heard about when it comes to online gameplay really attracted my attention.

Making my way back to the Xbox360 section of the store with the two cases in each hand, I was once more fighting with myself over which game I wanted. Well, I pondered on this moments more and ultimately decided to go with Call of Duty 4, because of its quirks which enticed oh so much. Making my way to the counter with the Call of Duty 4 case in my hand I placed it on the counter and was ready to check out.

Trying to start conversation was simple enough, I mentioned some video game related things, more importantly Super Mario Galaxy. I had already played it at another gamestop, and instantly felt in love with it and wanted a Nintendo Wii. Well, I talked to the guy about it, and he basically said it was fun, blah blah, well, as I was about to leave, I noticed on their Wii display they had Super Mario Galaxy set up to play. Well, the previous time(s) I played it, I never got a chance to make it to Bowser or any type of boss Fight. This time was my chance.

After gathering enough of the Stars and doing death-defying maneuvers, I was finally able to battle Bowser. Well, Bowser Jr. that is. Though it wasn't him directly. Just some giant-ass machine with these legs I had to tower over while dodging Bullit Bills to get to the crown of the things head. Atop it lay the Galaxy Star(or wahtever its called), and I now had to get the class casing around it to break. And since Mario isn't able or doesn't want to just do his spin attack and break the shit open or at least kick it, I have to think of something else. The bullit bills, but becore I could do more, i was tossed outisde of the Star's perimeter and a gate had risen. Well, I wasn't as defeated as one might think. Since the bullit bills followed me, i would just cause them to run into the gate, then the glass and that'd be it. Especially since the Star was powering the machine in teh first place. Also, Bowser Jr. would have to endure verbal and mental (maybe phsyical too) abuse from Bowser Sr. for being an asshat just like his father or whatver. (lol).

After destroying the robot and feeling mighty happy I left Gamestop, murked across the parking lot, made it to my 1992 Chevy Cavalier and went home. After I got home, I opened it, popped it in my 360, and started to have at it on the single player. It was a very fun/interesting experience.

I knew it wasn't going to be very long, I had read about that. But what was of it was good. In fact it was great. Never boring, never too tedious and/or stupid. By mixing the missions up with different people was a smart move by Infinity Ward(developers of the game) to incorporate. That way, you maybe don't get too attached to one character, or too bored. Though in some ways, I couldn't help but feeling bad for the characters in some way. Well, after tearing through the game in a relative short amount of time, I figured it was time for multiplayer.

I went to it, waiting in the lobby for all of the other players to sync up and for the countown timer to reach zero and my first round of online multiplayer with CoD4 began. It was a good experience. The guys I was playing with, were around my age more, not like the lot of young kids who play Halo and want to claim their cool when they use their gravity hammer to get a 14 point jump on everyone else. Fuck that shit I say, play with the assault rifle. Anyway. After playing round after round, gaining experience, I finally leveled up a few times where i was able to create-a-class. Which is truly what makes the online experience interesting. Because as you gain rank, you unlock more and more mods for your weapons, and perks. Some of the perks are really nice too, one of my personal favorites, "Sleight of Hand"( i think its called), allows you to reload faster, which is really nice for those machines where it seems to take 30 minutes to reload the thing. There are so many combinatoins for one to work with, the possibilities seem endless!

Now, with a short and maybe ill-mannered close (It's 8am, haven't had any sleep and I'm tired) I'm here to say, CoD4 was a great game and i highly recommend it to anyone who is able to get their hands on it (take it they're of appropriate age and/or able to handle the blood, violence, etc. ;) ), for it in some ways even Kills Halo, when it comes to multiplayer. The only thing Halo 3 has on anyone is the video recording function which is built in, and the Forge. Other than that its subpar. but thats a story for another time.

Tell me what you think, comments are gladly welcome.

I really want CoD4 -- for PC, though. I'm not a console gamer. The game feels very solid and runs amazingly on my rig (the demo, at least).

Also, glad to see an Xbox fan denouncing Halo. There are many other, better multiplayer shooters out there.

Get Call of Duty 4, its highly worth it. I wish I had a computer which could run certain games, one day I will.

And I'm not entirely denouncing Halo, just certain elements of it. Halo, in a lot of ways has so much potential, or had rather. Especially with the single player. It's like the story is/was there, but Bungie didn't do much with it, which is quite a shame, because I love a great story. I did notice with Halo 3 they tried to implement some type of story elements in it, but by that time it was pretty much too late, the damage prior had already been done. The books are rather silly too, I haven't read them, but the premise of them is. I mean, they're sparking about a story which was never shown within the game.

But wahtever.
