Video Game Review: Call of Duty: World at War

Posted by FGIJonC - April 15th, 2009

Hello everyone, this is my 2nd review, my prior ones were of Super Mario Galaxy and CoD: Modern Warfare. If you want to read them you can go Here.

Anyway, I'm here to review CoD: WaW. Now, I know the game is a few months old, but unfortunately I have been a few months behind when it comes to play new games. In fact, this is the first game I've bought in a while because i"ve been having financial issues. Now onto the game:

The game truly lived up to my expectations, though some may say it doesn't compare much to CoD4, and you're right, it truly doesn't. Its based in WWII for one thing and with that, Treyarch were taking a giant risk doing so after Infinity Ward decided to delve into modern times. You could say they spoiled us with the new weapons and whatnot. But Treyarch were able to take what IF(Infinity Ward) did and change it back to WWII and keep it awesome. Especially since they based it around the Pacific territories along with the European. Plus, you have Keifer Sutherland doing the main character's voice.

The Campaign is very great. How it puts you in the shoes of two different people (Miller and Dimitri; American and Russian respectively) is a nod from CoD4 but it takes that and improves upon it greatly. They take was what intense and multiply it by 100 and make things more suprising, grueling and make you wonder when the Japanese are going to come from under the ground with banzai attacks the like. Depending on your difficultly you start to get the feeling you're not safe and before to trudge carefully instead of running into the forrays with guns blazing. Because if you do that, you will be shot down and killed or even stabbed in the chest with a bayonet.

Treyarch also did a very good job of showing the emotional side of war and how friendships can be forged but also how quickly they can end when someone is killed. It happens more than once and makes you feel sad for the soldiers. The authnicity of CoD5 was very high too, and the graphic nature of it all was very commendable. Showing limbs cut off, bodys blown up, etc. Its way bloodier than prior Call of Duty games, but rightly so. Again, it shows the true gruesomeness of war and how it can be no holds barred. The cutscenes between missions are also great how they combine real footage along with the newly created scenes demonstarting attack patterns and maps and whatnot of each side, both American and Russian.

Now onto multiplayer. One thing this installation of CoD has is a co-op campaign mode which is a truly welcome edition. My old qualm about it is the fact they're not in the same chronological order as the solo campaign is and you're also without the cutscenes too. With it being this way it makes how events happen a bit confusing. For example, someone get killed(I'm keeping this spoiler free), and you would think that they're out of the game or story, but then the next mission that person is back and its like, "what the?" But aside from that, its fine. Playing with your friends in normal co-op or competitive (you compete for higher points by getting more kills, etc) is a great thing.

Onto to the online play. If you're truly used to CoD4, this will seem a bit weird to you. The guns are different, obviously the environments are different, and the grenades are a bit different, along with what you get when you get 3 kill streaks, 5 kill streaks and 7 kill streaks(the 7 kill streak is the most different, but they all work in theory with the happenings from CoD4). But they all work very well.

The maps are great and diverse and I like how Treyarch split things up a bit more into different playlists and such. Somewhat simliar to Halo 3(if you're into that kind of thing). WHen you're first starting out you're even given a Bootcamp section to play it until you reach Level 8 so you can play with fellow newcomers and learn the ropes without being thrown to the dogs when you go to different modes. I think Treyarch did a good thing by making it where you have to reach a certain level before you get other game mode types. This, to me, gives you incentive to play the game so you can play these other modes(such as Hardcore), so you're not like, "okay what mode do I want to play?"

I think the class system IF introduced has greatly been improved upon. Treyarch kept the same perks from the prior CoD, but added more perks that are welcome additons. A good one is the perk that allows you to revive a teammate when they're in their Last Stand(sorry, I can't remember its formal name). Also, the vehicle perks are great too, though at times, to me, they seem a bit bland, but for what they're there for, they work. Speaking of vehicles, thats a great editon too; the ability to use vehicles in certain game modes. Its great to be able to get into a tank and blow someone up or run them over if you want.

Now, one of the most interesting aspects of multiplayer is the Nazi Zombies mode. I was really surprised when I caught wind of this being in the game. For some reason I thought of Left 4 Dead at first hearing about it(its a great game, if you haven't played it, go for it). Anyway, when you first play, you're stuck in some decrepid building and its rather quiet and outside its very foggy. Then in the distance you see a Nazi Zombie(no joke/pun intended) hobbling its up to the window with glowing eyes making crazy noizes and he starts attempting to break through the boards and such. So, what do you do, put bullets in him until he falls. When you first start out, you only have a pistol, but when you make bullet-contact with the zombies and rebuild the destroy boards or walls, you get points and with these points you're able to purchase new weapons which are outlined in white on the walls in various locations. With the points you're also able to unlock new areas in the building(s) which can help you out or hinder you, along with new weapons and other things too. All-in-all, this mode works, though it seems a bit boring at first especially if you're playing with people who don't have microphones, but once it gets going, you better hope you have a machine gun instead of the M1 Garand because you're need it once they start running at you and coming in higher numbers.

This game to me, mainly deserves a 5/5 rating. The only things that may take away from that would be how the campaign co-op isn't in a chronological order like the solo campaign, but thats easily excusable. I'm sure Treyarch had their reasons. Another thing is some of the glitches you may or may not experience. I was playing "Airfield" on solo and when I cleared out the bunker from the Japanese, and the objective cleared, Roebuck and the other guy stood there and the other non-important soldiers just stood behind their debris and I couldn't continue. There are also multiplayer glitches, which exist in all/most games. Though some if not all, have been fixed, but there are reports of some that still exist. These I have not seen myself.

So with that, thats my review of Call of Duty: World at War, the Xbox360 version. I highly recommend it, especially if you liked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and/or if you're on the fence about it since its based in WWII again. It is something thats entirely new and feels like WWII has never been explored a million times before. Just be wary of the potential glitches and have fun.

Stay tuned for my next review! (Whatever that is)

Oh and leave comments please and tell me what I should have maybe expanded upon!
